Place Value

This is a question related to place value – understanding that in the numeral 640, the 6 is worth ‘six hundreds’ and the 4 is worth ‘four tens’. Understanding place value underpins so much mathematical understanding, especially recognising what happens when we multiply or divide by 10, 100, 1000 and so on.

If you know 8×4, then you know 8×40, without having to count 40 lots of 8!
